Grand Traverse Beekeeping Club & Bee Haven Apiary proudly invite you to meet our featured speaker Mel Disselkoen. Mel will introduce beekeepers to his renowned Self-Sufficient Beekeeping Strategies for Novices and Experts Alike. This is open to ALL beekeepers and aspiring beekeepers
Mel Disselkoen has been a master beekeeper for more than 40 years. He knows bees. He is also a student of beekeeping history, using time-tested methods, and bringing them up to date for this era of beekeeping challenges. Disselkoen has devised a system of beekeeping that uses the bees own natural rhythms to address our most vexing issues with bees—outsmarting the varroa destructor, increasing honey production, avoiding swarm losses, raising healthy queens to improve our beekeeping stock, maintaining bees as prime pollinators and getting our hives through the winter.
Disselkoen’s How-to book, OTS Queen Rearing, weaves together the bees’ own internal cycles with beekeepers’ highest aspirations—healthy productive bees, year in and year out. In that respect, the title is misleading. Yes, he shows us how to raise queens “on-the spot,” but that is only one piece of the puzzle. Healthy queens, bred at the right time, right in their hives, give bees and beekeepers both, the edge against bee pests, and the cyclic advantages of channeling bees’ vigor where and when it is needed most. He takes bee biology and shows us how to keep our bees healthy, without miticides or harsh treatments.
Join us for an evening of inspiring and practical solutions linked directly to bee biology. Step away from the revolving door of recurring bee losses, treatments and starting over. Let’s look at beekeeping in a new sustainable way. Mel will also have books for sale and autograph.
